Hi Reader,
I’ve been honoured to have my channel shared in many “Designers to follow on YouTube” articles over the past 7 years, but something I’ve noticed is that the other channels listed alongside mine will often be the same.
Don’t get me wrong I have the utmost respect for those design YouTube peers, but in the last year in particular I’ve come across so many other fantastic design YouTube channels that are worth sharing. So I’m dedicating issue 10 of the Marketing Design Dispatch to recommending some channels you should subscribe to for design inspiration and education.
Dinma is a UX designer making videos to help newbie designers on their journey to become better designers. Watching her videos you'd never believe she only started her channel 3 months ago! They're engaging, useful and have slick motion graphics throughout. Subscribe to Dinma for videos about design, careers and life in general.
Maddy is a UI/UX designer who has some super informative videos in a huge range of design aspects. Her design walk-throughs are concise, researched, and have a relaxed, chatty vibe. Maddy also has a great Instagram full of carefully curated design content & advice.
Linda has a diverse range in video subjects, with plenty of helpful advice for new designers. She specialises in UX & product design, and shares practical ways to improve your knowledge & skills as a designer. Linda also owns a Slack group for designers to ask questions & support one another. We love a design community!
DesignerUp is a small business that shares content and resources in UI/UX and digital product design. Their bite-size videos include information on design tools, project examples, and commonly asked industry questions. Complex tasks are boiled down to simple steps in their descriptive but short tutorial videos.
Sara is a designer who's passionate about creativity and being a woman in tech. She is a designer for products that help freelancers manage their finances, and a freelance web designer on the side. Sara's channel has a great mix of educational, industry real talk, and vlog-style videos.
For tutorials, video game design reviews, and on-trend design discussions, Mike is your guy. With 20+ years of experience in design, Mike also does design review & feedback videos on his channel. His regular, tip-filled videos are definitely one to watch whether you're new to the design world, or consider yourself a design veteran.
Nathan's design specialty is in branding and web design. He uses his YouTube channel to give advice on progressing in the design industry. Nathan's goal is to help creatives bridge the gap between creativity and business, and has some great engaging videos to give you ideas to do just that. Follow Nathan for informative, business savvy videos on standing out, and advancing your career.
For tech-focused knowledge & tools of the trade, Arbot is a graphic designer who helps designers get started with their career through his videos. Arbot has a mix of industry advice, program tutorials, and hardware reviews - perfect for any creative starting out in the design world. Subscribe to Arbot for some great hacks and tricks of the trade.
James is a UX designer, making videos for web design tutorials. Each video is clear, concise, and no longer than 10 minutes long. James makes slick looking, interactive web graphics a breeze with every tutorial. This one is for all the Adobe XD lovers & learners out there. Check out James' videos to master the design behind the most commonly seen & used parts of a website.
Sharon is a UX/UI designer sharing design tutorials and career advise that has helped her become a better designer. Her videos are super informative, practical, and give off such a relaxed vibe making them a pleasure to watch! Sharon shares a huge number of helpful tools such as free courses to get your journey started, and program suggestions to help you along the way. Subscribe to Sharon to up your UX design game.
Greta is a UX designer who produces fun, dynamic videos with plenty of industry tips thrown in. Her channel began with a lifestyle and fashion focus, but has morphed into a knowledge-base for beginner UX designers, with the lifestyle videos sprinkled in for good measure.
From getting down to the basics of becoming a UX designer with no experience, and addressing work/home life, Greta's videos are an easy watch, and I look forward to seeing more of her design content!
Last but not least I absolutely have to recommend you subscribe to my Design Life podcast cohost, Femke, on YouTube. Her channel is growing quickly, and has honestly been one of the regular channels listed alongside mine in the past year or so, but I wanted to make sure you’re subscribed to her. She’s shared so much helpful content about landing a design job and conducting user research and you can always count on her to review a new UX design tool. She keeps it real talking real numbers & real struggles and will be a great addition to your subscription feed.
You might have noticed that the vast majority of the channels above deal with UX or product design rather than marketing, brand or web design. While of course we can learn a lot from each other and design principles span disciplines, I still would love to see more marketing designers sharing their work and process. If you’re a marketing designer who has been thinking about starting a blog or a YouTube channel, I hope you take it as a sign to get started!
If you decide to subscribe to any of the channels above, I’d love to hear about it! Should I do another roundup like this sometime?
Have a good week,
Charli
