sick leave 🤧
Published 7 days ago • 2 min read
Last week I was in Portugal on a yoga retreat, not thinking about work or this newsletter at all (sorry, not sorry!)
Me last week, clearly not thinking about work
It was a wonderful week of disconnection (from work & stress) and connection (to the other amazing women on the retreat).
Then on Sunday when I got home, I came down with a cold 🙃
On Monday I had a new team member starting (a seriously rare occurrence for me given how intentionally we hire at Kit – this was my first new team member for over a year) and of course there was the week of work to catch up on (the end of a quarter and start of a new one is always a busy time!)
I decided to take half a sick day, and just join meetings so that I was there to welcome my new team member and to make sure I wasn't a blocker on any projects my team were working on.
I ended the day feeling exhausted and woke up on Tuesday feeling even worse.
At first I considered doing the same thing: joining the meetings in my calendar but otherwise staying offline. But I decided (excuse my language) f**k it, I needed a full day in bed.
I napped hard. 😴 And today I woke up feeling SO much better.
I really hate the feeling of falling behind when needing unexpected time off work and I felt seriously guilty for not being able to give my new team mate more face time during his first few days, but I have to keep reminding myself that it's so much better to just take the dang sick day rather than 'push through', since the latter always ends up delaying recovery and making things worse in the long run.
Is this a groundbreaking revelation? Absolutely not. Is it common sense? Yes! At least, it should be. But I sometimes need a reminder of it and in the absence of anything else work-related to share with you today, I thought maybe you could use this reminder too.
I've spent today catching up, and with the remaining two days this week I plan on working on the career matrix for the Web Engineer on my team, reviewing data to get insights on a few things, making sure Q4 expectations are clear and hopefully spending some time learning a new AI tool on Friday.
So no doubt I'll be back to having lots to share next week!
Hope you're in good health, and that your week is going well.
